<p>As the linchpin of VW's ambitious plans for growth in the U.S. market, the Jetta has been <span id="more-637"></span>redesigned to accommodate the more-space mantra of Americans. A larger, more upscale version of the Volkswagen Jetta was revealed on Tuesday ahead of its arrival in the States in October.</p>

<p>Volkswagen says emphasis was also placed on content and technology--two more hallmarks U.S. consumers demand in modern daily drivers. A nicely loaded model will start at about $16,000, though base versions will be less expensive.</p>
<p>The new Jetta is equipped with six airbags as standard equipment (driver and front passenger airbags, side airbags in front and side curtain airbags in front and rear). Customers can add optional rear side airbags to this package. To ensure that the airbags deploy to their proper positions faster than ever, the new Volkswagen Jetta has a special sensor system for detecting crash intensity and igniting the airbags. The electronics, located centrally in the passenger compartment, evaluates low-frequency "palpable" deceleration signals. In addition, specially tuned accelerometers measure frequency components in the mid or "audible" range. These signal components are generated as car body waves when load-bearing structures in the front of the car deform very quickly. They propagate throughout the vehicle structure at a high speed and make precise information on the severity of the crash available very quickly.</p>

<p>By intelligently interrelating the "palpable" and "audible" signal components, the airbag sensor system obtains a faster and simultaneously more reliable characterisation of the crash. This makes it possible to adapt the deployment performance of the airbags and belt tensioners to the crash situation in order to provide optimal protection for passengers. In Germany, the Volkswagen sensor system has been awarded the Bavarian Innovation Prize.</p>

<p>High-strength, form-hardened steels are also used in the new VW Jetta. These special steels help to create an extremely safe vehicle structure while avoiding spiralling weight gains. The impact energy is routed through defined load paths according to the crash type, to absorb a share of the energy that would otherwise impact on the car's occupants.</p>

<p>Volkswagen has big plans to grow its stateside sales, and it hopes to sell 800,000 VW-badged cars in the U.S. in 2018. That is, as you might expect, very ambitious, especially considering VW sold roughly a quarter of that number here in 2009. The company is clearly targeting the mainstream buyer with the 2011 Jetta, so we’re glad to see that the competent, Germanic driving dynamics have remained intact despite the obvious cost cutting. Of course, if the cutbacks to the new Jetta bother you, VW will happily sell you a Golf or even a Jetta SportWagen (the wagon is still based on the previous generation). Those cars haven’t been decontented—at least not yet.</p>

<p>The single Komfort trim level is well-equipped, including alloy wheels, a sunroof, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, leatherette vinyl upholstery, power heated front seats, Bluetooth and an eight-speaker<span id="more-481"></span> sound system with an in-dash six-CD changer and satellite radio. The wagon includes all of the sedan's standard equipment and adds chrome roof rails. Also standard are a full complement of airbags, antilock brakes and stability control. Major options include a variety of exterior styling packages and a hard-drive-based navigation system.</p>

<p>The first thing you notice about the new Passat is that it's the latest Volkswagen to adopt design chief Walter de'Silva's new familial styling. Similar to the new Phaeton, the new Passat sports an angular front fascia and slatted four-bar grille flanked by angular headlights with incorporated LED daytime running lights. A neat styling touch, the LEDs lead up the headlight and create a character line that flows all the way back to the taillights where it meets another string of LEDs.</p>

<p>The 2010 Volkswagen Passat is an affordable midsize car with an interior that almost belongs in a more expensive class, combined with with suspension tuning that makes it fun to drive and an excellent safety record. However, it's also one of the most expensive midsize cars, particularly when fully loaded with options.</p>

This includes a 0-60 MPH time of 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 140 MPH. Though not Prius-killing, the 42 MPG combined mileage (we're guessing in the European cycle) is impressive for a sports car and would surely top any known competitors.<br />
This new family of cars would be designed specifically to<span id="more-213"></span> provide the driving thrills of the likes of the flagship Golf, but return the fuel economy of the firm’s ultra efficient Bluemotion models.</p>
<p>Speaking at the Geneva Motor Show, VW Vice President Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, said “Our Bluemotion badge is the best known low consumption label in Europe, and our work with it proves that customers are more sensitive to these things then ever before.”</p>
<p>“Our BlueSport badge offers a number of different opportunities, and while we are still waiting to see if the roadster we revealed at the Detroit Motor Show, it is possible we will choose to use the badge on other cars too.”</p>
<p>Should the plan go ahead, a hot new version of the Golf could line up alongside the eagerly anticipated GTI as early as 2010 – replacing the now discontinued, V6 engined R32 in the makers line up.</p>
<p>Though Dr Hackenburg refused to be drawn on the exact specification of the model, he did hint that its likely that BlueSport models could use small supercharged and turbocharged engines, regenerative braking systems and even hybrid power to deliver performance.</p>

VW’s new performance diesel Golf isn’t just a frugal alternative to the GTI – it’s cheaper than the hot hatch favourite, too.</p>
<p>With prices set to start at £21,850, the GTD undercuts its petrol stablemate by around £500. For that, buyers get a tweaked version of the 2.0-litre turbodiesel – delivering 168bhp compared to <span id="more-191"></span>the GTI’s 207bhp petrol turbo. But with 71Nm more torque, at 350Nm, the GTD should feel just as punchy.</p>
<p>When mated to the six-speed manual transmission, the new diesel returns 53mpg economy and puts out 139g/km of CO2.</p>
<p>Inside, the cabin gets a revised version of the famous GTI tartan, with red substituted for grey. The GTD goes on sale on 22 June, starting at £21,850 for the three-door six-speed manual. A twin-clutch DSG box adds another £1,305, with the DSG five-door costing £23,740.</p>

It's the most powerful diesel MkVI Golf yet, putting out 168bhp and 258lb ft of torque courtesy of a 2.0-litre common rail TDI engine. That'll see the GTD to 60mph in 8.1 seconds (a tenth quicker than the quickest MkV diesel Golf) and on to a top speed of 136mph. Emissions are an eminently sensible 139g/km.</p>
<p>VW is pitching the GTD as a sort-of-hot-hatch: the suspension has been dropped by 15mm compared with the standard Golf, and it can be specified with Active Chassis Control as seen in the Scirocco, which allows the driver to adjust the suspension, steering and acceleration response.<br />
